Faculty Spotlight Dr. Robert Carroll
Meet Dr. Robert Carroll
What do you currently do at UT? - "I'm an Assistant Professor of Instruction in CMS"
What inspired you to pursue a career in communication, and how did that lead you to where you are today? - "While working as an academic advisor, I realized I needed more insights into the lives of our students, so I looked for programs that would help me connect with and support them. Our own Interpersonal Communication PhD was the perfect fit and I’m honored to still be a part of this department. The knowledge gained in our program has paid dividends in creating connections and understanding how best others support our students."
What’s one of the most memorable things that happened during your Undergraduate Years? - "Becoming a Summer Welcome Leader - being selected to serve as an orientation leader changed my career trajectory. From that moment I knew I wanted to work in academia. SWIX!"
What’s one of the most memorable things that happened during your Graduate Years? - "Conducting research in Norway with Dr. Larry Browning and other Moody graduate students. It was an absolute joy and incredible opportunity to immerse myself and conduct ethnographic research. The scenery didn’t hurt either."
What accomplishment or moment in your career are you most proud of, and why? - ''As a first generation college student, earning my Ph.D. has been an incredible experience. It has opened so many doors and created meaningful connections across multiple industries."

If you could go back in time, what’s one piece of advice you would give to yourself? - "Trust the process - things are never one direction and setbacks are inevitable, but perseverance and trusting those who are there to support you is always the best bet."
What’s one piece of advice you would give current students? - "Learn and enjoy! It feels like everything is so high stakes these days, but the joy of teaching is sharing our love and passion for these topics. Relax, dive in, and let’s learn together."
Where would you love to travel to next? - "Andorra - while teaching abroad in Barcelona last year I didn’t get up to see how gorgeous it is, but this is my year!"
