Honors Programs
Graduation with Special Honors in Communication Studies
For graduation with special honors in Communication Studies, the Communication Studies Department requires that a student apply to the department chair for admission to the honors program during the semester that s/he completes 90 hours of coursework. Students may obtain an application form from their assigned academic advisor.
Requirements: To be eligible for the honors program, a student must have
- completed in residence at least 60 semester hours of coursework counted towards a degree for Communication Studies
- selected a Communication Studies’ faculty member who is willing to supervise an honors project
- attained a University GPA of 3.0 or better
- attained a Communication Studies GPA of 3.5 or better
- a completed application
After receiving approval from the departmental chair, the student registers for CMS 359H Honors Tutorial Course: Reading and must earn a grade of B or better. The following semester the student registers for CMS 379 Honors Tutorial Course: Special Project, and must earn a grade of B or better. The readings and special project for these 6 hours of course work are determined by the faculty advisor and the student and approved by the chair of the department. Upon completion of the course work and an application to graduate, the Office of Student Affairs orders a special certificate for the student and notifies the Registrar’s Office to place “Special Honors in Communication Studies” on the student’s transcript and diploma.
The Senior Fellows Program
The college-wide undergraduate honors program provides a broad, interdisciplinary supplement to the departmental majors. The program is designed for students with the talent and interest to go beyond the usual undergraduate experience.
Students are encouraged to speak to their assigned academic advisor to discuss how the Senior Fellows courses count toward their Communication Studies degree.
