CMS 398T Supervised Teaching in Communication Studies

University regulations provide that all Assistant Instructors shall, in the course of their first semester, of appointment, enroll in a regularly scheduled course on college teaching methodology and practices under the number 398T. Departmental regulations recommend that all teaching assistants enroll in 398T. A candidate for a master's degree may receive credit for no more than three hours of 398T within the semester hours of the standard master's program. With the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC), doctoral candidates may list in their official work program a 398T course which they have taken.

If a student can establish that she or he has met the objectives of CMS 398T, either at an educational institution or through experience in recent full-time teaching (letter from employer), s/he may petition to have the requirement waived, using the following procedure:

If students believe that they have met the objectives for 398T in a similar course, they can submit to the Graduate Advisor the syllabus for that course.

If students believe that they have met the objectives of 398T through experience in recent full-time teaching, they describe the experience in a written statement, provide a letter from the employer, and submit it to the Graduate Advisor. The description should include:

A special committee consisting of the Graduate Advisor and the Chair of the Department considers each request. The Graduate Advisor notifies the student, in writing, of the committee's decision. If the decision is to deny the request, the notification contains reasons for the denial. If the request is approved, the petition is forwarded to the Graduate School for approval. The Graduate School must approve the petition in order for the CMS 398T requirement to be waived.

CMS 398T MUST be taken for a grade, and does count toward the 9 hour minimum course requirement for employees and is counted as 3 hours outside student's area of study.
