This course designed to acquaint students with some of the more common issues involved in integrating theory and research on communication, cognition, and emotion. More specifically, we will be examining a number of social scientific theories of cognition and emotion, empirical work on various types of emotions, and studies on several current issues that affect the nature and impact of research on communication and emotion.
Contemporary Rhetorical Theory

This course will examine current issues and trends in rhetorical theory: analysis will be made of the grammatical, psychological-epistemological, and socio-linguistic foundations of rhetoric. Related issues regarding the relationship of rhetoric to other disciplines, including science, ethics, philosophy, communication, poetry and literature, will be investigated.
Rhetoric of Social Movements
Dr. Dana Cloud
A survey course covering the range of U.S. social movements from the 19th century to the present, including the labor movement, women's rights movements, abolition and civil rights, gay and lesbian rights, etc. Consideration of primary documents, theoretical and critical issues, and debates between "old" and "new" social movements scholars.
Campaign Communication

An introduction to research surrounding the actors (voters, candidates, consultants, new constituencies) and the texts (advertisements, debates, speeches, news coverage, party conventions, new media environments) of political campaigns with special attention to how this discourse shapes political life in the United States.
